GED® Accommodations


GED candidates who have documented disabilities may apply for Special GED Accommodations for Official GED testing. 

 

Covered disabilities include the following:

  • Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity
  • Emotional or Mental Health
  • Learning and Other Cognitive Disabilities
  • Physical or Chronic Health

 Accommodations might include:

  • Extended time
  • Private room testing
  • Scribe
  • Braile Edition
  • Audiocassette version
  • Calculator for entire Math test
  • Talking calculator
  • Supervised breaks

Before applying for accommodations, it is advisable to take the Practice GED—although no accommodations are available for the Practice GED—as a trial of need.

Application for accommodations should be made before registering for the Official GED because the process of application, review and approval takes at least a month. Once accommodations are approved, please be sure to request the specific accommodations at registration and discuss your accommodations the GED Examiner before starting any testing.

Some adaptations are available upon request without formal approval, but candidates need to ask in advance. Ask to speak with the Chief Examiner at registration.

 Adaptations that don't need approval:
  • One test per day
  • Earplugs
  • Priority seating
  • Unmarked straightedge
  • Temporary adhesive tags such as Post-It® Notes
  • Transparent overlay with highlighter
  • Magnification device
 

 Adaptations that require advance notice:

 

Items that may be brought from home to be inspected by Examiner prior to testing:

  • Large print test
  • Wheelchair accessability.

 

  • Pencil holder
  • Protection or shield from flourescent lighting
  • Wrist brace or splint
